Rogan Josh Spice Blend

Rogan Josh spices are a spicy Indian spice mix, used to make the authentic Indian curry Rogan Josh. The dish originates from the Kashmir region, where the Rogan Josh curry goes by the names of Roghan Josh or Roghan Ghosht.

The name “Rogan Josh” is derived from two Persian words: “Rogan” means “oil” or “fat,” and “Josh” means “intense heat” or “passion.” It’s believed that the dish was brought to
Kashmir by the Mughals, who ruled India during the 16th and 17th centuries.

The curry can be one of the dishes in the multicourse meal called Wazwan. This is the preparation of 7 meat dishes that are considered an art form. They illustrate a point of pride within Kashmiri culture and it’s a staple at weddings and other important gatherings, showcasing the hospitality and warmth of Kashmiri cuisine.

Rogan Josh curry powder is authentically prepared with pieces of red meat, usually lamb or mutton. They were served with an intensely, heavily spiced gravy with a base of garlic, ginger and onions. Since then, it has evolved to include other cuts of meat such as chicken, pork and beef. Rogan Josh is typically made with a base of yogurt and tomatoes, which contribute to its creamy texture and tangy taste. This combination balances the heat from the spices and chilies.
