South African Curry Powder has sharp, earthy flavours of cumin, fennel and turmeric, accompanied with zesty, sweet flavours of coriander seeds, cardamom and cinnamon. Traditionally, the spices are mixed with fresh ginger and garlic to make a flavourful curry base to mix with tomatoes and coconut milk.

This curry powder is mild but can be easily adapted to create a hot curry with the addition of chillies (we suggest our ground Habanero Chillies!).

Africa’s cuisine has been shaped and influenced by Arabs, Portuguese, French and British flavours. However, South African Curry powder’s most prominent influence would be the culinary traditions of the Cape Malay community, who have roots in South East Asia and the Indonesian archipelago. These flavours are showcased within this versatile blend. It works great with meat, fish and vegetable-based dishes.

South African Curry plays a significant role in cultural celebrations and gatherings. Whether it’s a festive occasion, a community event or family meal, expect to find this flavourful dish being served up.

Try this Curry Powder with tamarind paste and use to marinate fish and joints of meat. Alternatively, try our recipe here for a traditional Bobotie! – a popular South African dish that really showcases the fusion of Cape Malay flavours with Dutch influences.

Bought this to cook a bobotie for a South African friend. Used your recipe. She was delighted and seemed to really enjoy it. I now only buy Seasoned Pioneer spices and herbs because I have been so pleased with the results.

Gives a curry lovely flavour. Its almost buttery but warm and mild. I put 4 good teaspoons of the powder into chicken and some veg with a tinned of chopped tomatoes and a tin of coconut milk.
