Anise seeds or Aniseeds are warm, sweet seeds with hints of liquorice, fennel and star anise. Cultivated from the Apiaceae plants, these seeds are used across Mediterranean and Southwest Asian cooking.

Native to both regions, this small, star-shaped seed (sometimes confused with star anise) contains an oil called anethole, which is responsible for the characteristic flavour and aroma of anise. In ancient times, Anise Seeds were used as a breath freshener, a spice in bread making and even for medicinal purposes. It’s believed to have digestive, expectorant and carminative properties.

Love or hate the flavour, Anise seeds are famously associated with Ole English sweets such as aniseeds balls and humbugs. Aside from confectionary, these seeds are perfect within tomato-based sauces or used as a dry rub on pork.

LOVE THEM LOVE ANISEED. When i was a child my ouma (grandmother) used to make little buns.. she called them mosbolletjies, some fresh and soft and some dried to make rusks.
I used my anise seeds to put into my challah on Friday... a nostalgic and lovely result.

Very good anise seeds. Sprinkle it crushed on beef the last minute of steak time. The beef is good if rubbed with cardamom masala and pepered with tellicherry pepper before cooking. A good Béarnaise sauce with a sprinkle of chipotle chillies and truffel oil is heaven with the cardamom masala meat.
