Caraway seeds have a sweet and spicy flavour with notes of mint, aniseed and orange. The seeds are used within Middle Eastern cuisine to flavour sweet bread and they give rye breads their distinctive taste.
Known for their long shelf life, Caraway Seeds can be stored for several years without losing their flavour and aroma. Widely cultivated across Europe, Asia and North America, they’ve been in use for thousands of years with evidence that Ancient Egyptian, Roman and Greek cuisine all contained Caraway Seeds. This is partly down to their many health benefits – they’re rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.
The versatile seeds are also used across Eastern Europe to flavour soups and stews, such as the Hungarian Goulash. Found in German and Polish versions of sauerkraut, these striped seeds compliment duck, pork and work wonderfully with cabbage, potatoes and other root vegetables.
