Whole Piquin Pepper

Whole Piquin chillies, also known as Pequin or chile pequeno, are small orange Mexican chillies. The oval-shaped chilli is ½ inch long and ¼ inch wide with a smoky, nutty and citrus flavour. The name “piquin” translates to “small” or “tiny” in Spanish…while this chilli may be small but they certainly pack a punch! With their searing heat, these chillies are 20 times hotter than a jalapeno, measuring between 30,000 to 60,000 SHU on the Scoville scale.

Typically, piquin chillies are dried, in order to retain their intense heat and flavour, while also making them more convenient for long-term storage and easy incorporation into various dishes. Alongside Mexican salsas, hot sauces and marinades, you can also use them to infuse flavour and kick into your oils, vinegars and spirits.

For example, the chillies are commonly used in tomato sauces and marinades for red meats to create depth of flavour. They are great when left to steep in olive or rapeseed oil to make a chilli infused dressing. You could also use the chillies to infuse vinegars like balsamic or apple cider.
