Mulato chillies crushed have a smoky, mild flavour with notes of liquorice, tobacco and cherry. In whole form, the chillies are chocolate brown and this is where they get the name “mulato” from. They are 3 inches wide and 5 inches long, with a body that tapers into a point.

Mulato chillies are actually a dried, ripened form of the poblano pepper. Because mulato chillies are left to ripen longer, they gain their distinctive dark brown colour, their leathery texture and smoky, mild flavour. They measure between 2500 to 3000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU)

In Mexico, when a dried chilli pepper forms a taste, texture, and colour that’s unique in comparison with their fresher counterparts (in this case, the poblano pepper), it’s given an entirely new name to help chefs distinguish which version of the pepper should be used in recipes.

Mulato crushed will enable you to create authentic mole and poblano sauces at home (try our Turkey mole recipe!) This mild Mexican chilli is great when partnered with other spices like chipotle, cinnamon, cumin and coriander to make Chilli con Carne.

Absolutely fantastic!

This brand is by far the best crushed mulato I've ever used - it has a very strong fruity-smokey aroma and a very lovely, deep and lingering chocolaty aftertaste. Though I'd say the "heat rating"of this website is way off :D It has close to zero heat. Lovely warmth, yes, but spiciness is somewhere between 0,25 and 0,5 level and certainly nowhere near the "2" they've given it here :D Which is perfect, as you can use it for seasoning and combine with other chillies.

100% recommend, though.
Especially fantastic when combined with chipotle, i.e. used in a chilli con carne. And it works really well with Middle-Eastern and North-African food, too.
