Crushed Chipotle pepper comes from a red jalapeño that is smoked, dried and crushed. Chipotle is wonderfully sweet and smoky, with tobacco and chocolate notes. We offer these chilli peppers in both crushed and whole forms.

Chipotle chillies originated in Mexico, particularly within the region of Veracruz, with the name coming from the apt Nahuatl word “chipotle,” meaning smoked chilli. They’re considered a cornerstone of traditional Mexican flavours, but have also gained international fame, adding their sweet, smoky depth to a number of fusion cuisines.

To produce these chillies, jalapeños are typically smoke-dried over a period of several days. Traditionally, wood fires (particularly mesquite or pecan wood) would be used, ensuring the characteristic smoky flavour, but also helping to preserve them.

Within Mexico and bordering USA states, these are added to salsas and marinades for grilled meats. The crushed pepper also works great in tomato-based dishes. Try using to season homemade burgers, meatballs and even sausage casserole!

Used this with the smoked garlic powder and some smoked paprika in a slow-cooker bean casserole. So good, lovely rich flavour and you don't need to use much.

Crushed chipotle has quickly become one of my favourite spices - I'm on my fourth bag now and I add it to anything and everything that can benefit from a touch of heat and added depth of flavour. Although it's rated "explosive" I don't find it all that hot, maybe because it is so flavourful you only need to add a little. Try braising potato slices (in a casserole with a lid in a low to medium oven) - add a good glug of olive oil, some sliced garlic, a little salt and half a teaspoon of smoked chipotle for a simple but irresistible side dish.

Thanks to Seasoned Pioneers for great service - now I never need to be without this wonderful ingredient!
