Allspice Berries, Ground

Ground Allspice is a peppery mix of flavours, reminiscent of cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Popular in the Caribbean, Allspice is also an essential spice within Arabic Cuisine for dishes such as Kibbeh, sweet baked goods and the famous Shawarma.

The name “allspice” comes from the belief that the spice combines the flavours of several other spices (such as cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg). Because of this unique flavour, it became popular during the colonial era as a substitute for other, more expensive spices and consequently made its way around the world (which is why it’s so popular in Arabic cuisine, too).

Ground allspice is derived from the dried, unripe berries of the Pimenta dioica tree, native to the Caribbean, particularly Jamaica. The berries are picked when green and then dried to develop their distinctive flavour and aroma, before being ground down.

Try adding to gingerbread, carrot cake and Christmas pudding or pair with root vegetables such as squash and sweet potato.
