Quatre-Epices is a spicy, peppery spice mix with sweet notes. The name means ‘four spices’ in French. These four ingredients are black pepper, nutmeg, cloves and ginger. Quatre-Epices adds a warmth and depth of flavour to rich meats that have been braised in wine.
The spice mix often features in French kitchens and is considered a classic staple throughout French cuisine. Indeed, it’s been around for centuries, having been widely used during the mediaeval and Renaissance periods. During the 17th and 18th centuries, it was popularised in France as a key ingredient for traditional French charcuterie and meat dishes.
To this day, it is hailed an all-purpose seasoning, flavouring dishes from grilled chicken and roasted joints of meat to soups, stews, charcuterie and cheese sauces. this spice blend is ideal within homecooked sausages, pâtés and terrines. It has also gained notoriety outside of French cuisine, being used in various international dishes that have a French influence, or want to replicate the authentic flavours of classic French recipes.
