Crushed De Arbol Chillies

De Arbol chillies, or Chilli de Arbol, are 2-3 inches long and ¼ inch wide in whole form. They are sun-dried to allow their heat to develop, then crushed into flakes. With a distinctive post-box red shade, these chillies are fresh, sharp and explosive! They have a relatively high heat rating, ranging from 15,000 to 30,000 Scoville heat units (SHU).

Sometimes also known as Chile de Árbol, they originated in Mexico. The name “De Arbol” translates to “tree-like” in Spanish which refers to the plant’s tall and woody stem that often resembles a tree trunk. They typically have a vibrant red colour, but green and orange hues aren’t uncommon either.

These chillies offer a hot and intense spiciness with a distinct, earthy flavour — a subtle nuttiness and a slightly smoky taste that adds complexity to dishes.

This flavour is embraced throughout Mexico, where it’s often used in soups and sauces. Primarily used for their searing heat, the chillies are excellent additions to hot sauces and other condiments. Add these chilli flakes to meals where you want a punch of heat!
