Hot Spanish Paprika

Hot paprika is punchy, intense and hot! Not to be confused with pimenton picante, this paprika is not smoked. Like its sister mild sweet paprika, hot paprika is a worldwide spice and used to add flavour and heat to dishes. It can also add a dash of colour when used as a garnish.

When the Capsicum annuum pepper plant (native to South America) was brought to Spain in the 16th century it was an instant hit. Hot spanish paprika is made from grinding the dried fruits of this Capsicum annuum pepper and the Capsaicin it contains has been found to have numerous health benefits, including reducing inflammation, improving digestion, and relieving pain.

Households across Spain and the Mediterranean add hot paprika to tapas dishes and Romesco sauce. Try adding to tomato-based dishes like Bolognese, homemade salsa or Spanish omelette. Alternatively, mix into batter when making fish or chicken to add a fierce kick!
